Wausau Homestead
The Wausau Homestead in Wisconsin, is a modern multigenerational home created to meet the client's desire for a low-maintenance, energy-efficient "Modern Homestead." Inspired by the Scandinavian Longhouse, the home is designed for communal living while offering distinct spaces for a young family and their parents. The structure comprises two black, steep-pitched gable forms that blend into the wooded landscape, creating a modern aesthetic that respects its natural surroundings. The larger of the two gable forms serves as the main house, while the smaller accommodates the parents’ suite. A flat-roofed connector houses the entry, mudroom, and mechanical areas, linking the two main structures. Inside, the family room and kitchen provide central gathering spaces, enhancing the home’s sense of unity and comfort. This thoughtful, sustainable design successfully balances communal and private spaces, fulfilling the clients’ vision of a shared family homestead that harmonizes with the wooded surroundings.
