REMEMBERING LARS PETERSSEN
We are saddened by the loss of our beloved co-founder Lars Peterssen. As you may have heard, Lars passed away from complications of frontotemporal degeneration last week at his home in San Jose del Cabo. We’re thankful that Lars and his husband R.D. were able to visit his last project, a stunning casa next door to theirs. “Of course, with Lars’s eye for detail, he noted what needed to be fixed!” R.D. says.
Lars was born on Long Island and grew up in Phoenix. “He was the perfect mixture of his parents—brilliant like his father, who designed the landing systems for 747s and worked on the jetpacks for the moonwalk and the Hubble Telescope, and sweet like his mom, who’s still going strong at age 90,” R.D. says.
Lars went to Carleton College and spent a year studying Russian at Leningrad State University, where he met R.D. After Lars graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Physics from Carleton, he and R.D. moved to Minneapolis, where he had a distinguished career in supercomputing, academia and architecture.
Last August, AIA Minnesota honored Lars with the 2020 Special Award for his contributions to architectural education, advancement of technology and mentorship to architecture professionals. But, of all Lars’s many accomplishments, he was most proud of the homes he designed for friends.
R.D. is planning a special celebration for Lars around his birthday in June 2021 and we will share details in the new year. On behalf of R.D. and everyone in our studio, thank you for your friendship. It means the world to us.

Gabriel Keller continues to work as a first responder, volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician in Lake City and working with Hennepin Emergency Medical Services in Minneapolis while Tammy Angaran has continued to donate blood regularly. Kristine Anderson and Peter Atkins are using their talents to sew masks— check out Peter and his partner Sonia's Cloth Masks, or send an email to email@example.com if you’d like one of hers.
Star Tribune: Cottagewood Beach House
Our beautiful Cottagewood Beach House, built by Streeter Homes, was featured as an AIA Home of the Month in the StarTribune. Our client wanted the home to feel modest and understated, like a Hamptons cabin. Not ornate — simple and elemental.
“It’s one of those projects that’s a perfect example of what collaboration can create — when everybody’s allowed space to bring their best ideas.”
Mpls.St.Paul Magazine: Travail Kitchen
"Rather than turn to a commercial-only architecture firm, Travail Kitchen chose P/K Architecture, a Minneapolis shop best known for creating high-end modern homes. “We held a charrette at our offices to hear them riff on all their ideas,” says Kristine Anderson, a principal at P/K. “We were two groups deadly serious about methodology, but we wanted them here to talk about all the ‘what ifs.’ And that’s how you get all these follies.”
Lake Society Magazine: De La Pointe Lofts
"De La Pointe is a rare opportunity to live in luxury just steps from shopping, restaurants, grocery stores, walking and hiking trails, and the city's crown jewels, the chain of lakes."
Artful Living Magazine: ELEVEN
We're proud to be an interior architect of ELEVEN, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects. Says Artful Living, "Officially under construction, ELEVEN is undoubtedly reinventing downtown Minneapolis living. Its presence has already garnered the national attention it deserves, drawing eyes to one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. It’s not just part of the luxury boom the city is experiencing — it’s leading the way."
Lake Society Magazine: Bennett Bossert
"Bennett's artwork is soothing and captivating. It feels organic and, at first glance, quite simple. After all, they are just lines on a piece of paper or panel of wood. But, the pieces draw you in. They are complex. They have life and they move. They consist of undulating forms that can be experienced at any scale. They could be waves. They could be eroded earth. Or they could be molecular structures or vibrations of the cosmos. What quickly becomes clear, even to the untrained eye, is that there is a relationship between each line on the surface. When you realize that they are all drawn freehand and not by a computer, they become more impressive and inspiring. The discipline of parametric design is at the heart of Bossert’s work."

New Ideas Trends: East Isles Retreat
East Isles Retreat is a highlight of New Idea Trends. This wonderful collaboration with Coen+Partners Landscape Architects and ReuterWalton Construction was completed while Lars Peterssen and Gabriel Keller were at Domain Architecture & Design. An unuseable and unwelcoming backyard has become the center of summer activity, directly connecting indoor spaces of the home to the new terraces and pool. A row of birch trees and an elegant white fence frame the view of the new pergola and stone wood-burning fireplace.
MidWest Home: Meadow Lane Residence
The renovation of an original 1963 Elizabeth Close house was featured in Midwest Home. The design updated the home to allow for the needs of a modern family while respecting the original architecture. A new spiral stair now leads from the living room to the terrace below without obstructing the facade. Inside, the kitchen's ceiling was vaulted and a wall removed to open the space to the dining room, reflecting the important role the kitchen now plays in family life. The project, completed while Lars Peterssen was a principal at Domain Architecture & Design, is another successful collaboration with interior designer Sally Wheaton Huscha.
Kitchen Trends: Edgewater Penthouse I
Edgewater Penthouse I was featured on the cover of Kitchen Trends magazine! The condo, designed by Lars Peterssen and Gabriel Keller while they were at Domain Architecture & Design, is another example of the organic modern design approach that we can bring to our projects when our clients want a warm, contemporary interior.
Surly Brewing: Destination Brewery & Restaraunt
P/K developed the conceptual design for Surly Brewing’s newly announced “destination brewery”! A one of a kind experience in Minnesota, the 60,000sf brewery boasts many sustainable features and include a restaurant, beer garden, green roof deck, and even a windmill.
Landscape Architecture Magazine: East Isles Retreat
The East Isles Retreat was featured in Landscape Architecture magazine. The article highlights Coen + Partners award-winning landscape design, which plays modern geometries and subtle textures off the historic details of the Lake of the Isles home. A new raised terrace maximizes views of the lake and creates a direct connection into the home. The pattern of bluestone pavers clearly delineates areas of activity: panels of lawn, the pool, and a pergola and fireplace for outdoor living space.
We are excited to announce that the Lake of the Isles Residence and Vujovich Design Build received a COTY Award from NARI Minnesota! The home for Dan Buettner, which was designed by Lars Peterssen and Kristine Anderson while at Domain Architecture & Design, is a study in what is possible when talented designers, an inspired client and a meticulous contractor collaborate. Thanks again to Vujovich and all of the ASID interior designers that made it possible!
Renovation Style Magazine: Mount Curve Residence
The Mount Curve Residence, designed by Lars Peterssen and Garbiel Keller while they were with Domain Architecture & Design, was featured in Renovation Style magazine. “By abandoning convention and embracing change, one family elevates its humdrum kitchen from functional space to a high-art cooking and gathering hub." The renovation also included a sunlit family room addition that opened the home (and the kitchen) to the yard. This exceptional project is another collaboration with interior designer Andrew Flesher.
Midwest Home: Edgewater Transitional
Another fabulous Edgewater Loft was features in Midwest Home. As interior designer Sally Wheaton Hushcha said, the client “let us all flex our aesthetic muscles and do the things we were trained to do.” The result is a fantastic, one of kind pied-a-terre that exceeds the homeowner’s expectations. Explore the six page spread of luscious photos in the magazine (on newsstands now!), the article online, and our portfolio for additional photos.
Artful Living: Healthy by Design
Can your home bring you happiness? Dan Buettner discusses how his Blue Zones philosophies for living were applied to the design of his home's renovations in Artful Living. Responding to research showing that the happiest people live near water, his home and new master suite were opened to Lake of the Isles. With sweeping views and cool breezes, the new 2nd floor porch provides moments of rest and connection with nature that are essential to a healthy lifestyle. Be sure to check out this great collaboration, including the ASID interior designers and Vujovich!
