West Lake Okoboji Residence
This new lakefront home was designed for a site that had been in the homeowner’s family for generations. When they decided it was time to build a new retreat for their family to enjoy, they wanted the home to feel like it “always belonged.” By incorporating a low profile massing, maintaining the existing stone retaining walls at the lakefront, and blending with an existing boathouse and detached garage, this home creates a sense of place that is carefully integrated with its context.
The resulting home is a casual, family-focused, single-level retreat that will easily allow the Owners to enjoy it for years to come. It is comprised of a series of pavilions linked by transparent spaces that offer a natural connection to the land and the lake. The clients love to cook and entertain, so PKA and the design team worked with them to create an efficient and functional kitchen and pantry that serve as the hub of the home. An adjacent sitting room allows family members to relax while still being engaged with those in the kitchen. The home offers unobstructed views of the lake and flows freely from inside to out, making the most of it’s incredible site and views.
